Interesting article in the Telegraph today regarding the growth of the BUCS Super Rugby competition and how the likes of Bath and Exeter are aligning themselves with local university teams as an extension of their academy systems.

Does anyone know why there are no north western uni teams in the league? Is there promotion / relegation etc and have Sale tried to team up with the local universities to help grow their teams / create a strong team in Manchester or other nearby unis?

Interesting - thanks for that, I was not aware of the initiative. Hopefully the MMU rugby team will rise up the rankings off the back of this too and it will help to attract more of the best young talent to the region. e.g. Feyi Waboso apparently chose Exteer because of their links to the university...

It doesn’t have to be a local uni. Despite being based at Surrey uni, Quins have instead linked up with Cardiff Met.

Mate’s brother has just joined Quins’ academy and been sent off to uni in Cardiff. He still trains with Quins whilst playing BUCS.

So we could find a top BUCS team to much doesn’t have a link with a pro team
